What is a garage lintel and why does it fail?

A lintel is the structural support that spans the garage door opening and carries the brick/veneer above. Garage lintel failures come from undersized or unprotected steel, long spans (16–18+ ft), corrosion, improper bearing, missing weep holes/flashings, and Gulf Coast moisture/salt exposure.

Diagonal step-cracks at the corners, a horizontal crack along the brick row over the door, bowing/sagging at the header, separation between brick courses, binding or misaligned garage doors, and fresh mortar that keeps re-cracking.

It’s structural. The lintel is bearing masonry loads. Ignoring it risks progressive cracking, brick displacement, water intrusion, and in severe cases partial veneer collapse.

Our StrongHold® Lintel Repair System replaces or supplements the existing lintel with a properly sized galvanized steel angle/beam, restores correct bearing at each jamb, and re-ties masonry. We also integrate corrosion protection, weeps/flashings, and finish trim to prevent repeat failures.
Often, yes—selective brick removal lets us access the failed lintel, correct flashing/weep details, and reinstall the veneer flat and true. We match brick and mortar as closely as possible for a clean finish.

We protect the opening and temporarily shore as needed. After the new lintel is installed and masonry is reset, we verify the opening is square. If the existing door was binding due to sag, function typically improves; any door adjustments are coordinated with your door contractor as needed.

Temporary shoring or caulk doesn’t restore structural capacity and can hide ongoing movement. A post in the opening creates clearance and safety issues. A properly sized lintel is the correct fix.

Many hairline and moderate cracks close when the opening is re-leveled and the veneer is reset. Wider cracks may need mortar replacement/tuckpointing. We address both structure and finish.
